What it does
This Determination is a legislative instrument made under subsection 13A(1) of the Currency Act 1965 (the Act). It specifies the standard weight, allowable variation from that weight, dimensions and design for two particular coins that the Royal Australian Mint is authorised to produce. The instrument came into force on the day after it was registered, which was 22 August 2012. Its effect is narrow and technical: it sets the physical and design parameters that the Mint must meet when striking these coins.
The first coin is a 2 dollar coin (item 1 of Schedule 1) made from a copper, aluminium and nickel alloy (the standard composition for circulating two dollar coins in Australia). Its standard weight is 6.60 grams with an allowable variation of plus or minus 0.26 grams. The maximum diameter is 20.62 millimetres and the maximum thickness is 3.20 millimetres. The shape is circular (symbol S1), the edge is interrupted milling (E1), the obverse is a standard Queen Elizabeth II design (O1) and the reverse is a Remembrance Day commemorative design (R1) featuring a poppy and the repeated text “REMEMBRANCE DAY” and “LEST WE FORGET” in inverse order, plus “TWO DOLLARS” and “REMEMBRANCE”. This coin was intended for circulation as legal tender, although its commemorative nature means many would be hoarded by collectors.
The second coin is a 1 dollar coin (item 2) with a standard composition of not less than 99.9 per cent silver. Its standard weight is 31.103 grams (exactly one troy ounce) with an allowable variation of plus 1.80 grams only (no negative tolerance). The maximum diameter is 40.60 millimetres and the maximum thickness is 4.00 millimetres. The shape is circular (S1), the edge is continuously milled (E2), the obverse shows Queen Elizabeth II with “AUSTRALIA 2013” and “. 1 DOLLAR .” (O2), and the reverse (R2) depicts a coloured image of a patch of grass, a kangaroo with a joey, a hilly landscape, leaves, the designer’s initials “AB”, and a circular border reading “EASTERN GREY KANGAROO” and “1 oz .999 Ag”. This coin is a silver bullion piece, not intended for general circulation but rather as an investment or collector product.
