What it does
This Determination, made under subsection 13A(1) of the Currency Act 1965, sets out detailed technical specifications and design particulars for a set of coins enumerated in Schedule 1 to the Determination (see the Determination heading and s 3). Section 3 expressly states that, for the purposes of subsection 13A(1) of the Currency Act 1965, each item in Schedule 1 specifies five categories of information for a coin: the coin’s denomination, its standard composition, its standard weight and allowable variation from that weight, the coin’s dimensions, and the coin’s design (s 3). Section 2 provides the commencement rule, that the Determination commences on the day after it is registered. The compilation notes show the original registration date and an immediate amendment instrument (see Notes).
Mechanically, the Determination does not create novel regulatory powers or criminal offences within its text. Its operative content is the table-form Schedule 1, which lists 13 items (labelled Item 1 through Item 13) and for each item specifies the denomination and a set of technical and design specifications. The Schedule includes multiple entries for the same face value with differing compositions, weights, edge treatments and reverse designs. Examples include $1 coins in different metal compositions (copper‑aluminium‑nickel and at least 99.9% silver), $5 and $10 coins in precious metals (silver and gold of differing purities and weights), and a 50 cent dodecagonal coin in copper and nickel (see Schedule 1).
Section 4 limits the Determination’s effect by stating that the specifications in Schedule 1 “do not affect any other determination of the specifications of a coin” (s 4). The Notes appended to the Determination record the instrument’s registration and an Amendment Determination 2007 (No. 1), and the compilation states it was prepared on 6 December 2007 taking into account the Amendment Determination (Notes).
