This Determination, made under the Currency Act 1965 (the "Act") (see definition at s3), prescribes technical specifications for a set of coins produced by the Perth Mint. (Commencement: the day after registration — s2.)
Section 4 operates under subsection 13A(1) of the Act and says that, from commencement, each entry in Part 1 of Schedule 1 specifies for the listed coin: its standard composition (metal purity), its standard weight and the allowable variation from that weight, its maximum dimensions (diameter/thickness or other dimension), and the design to appear on the coin (s4(1)). Section 4(2) clarifies that this Determination does not override other determinations made under the same subsection.
Section 5 says that Part 2 of the Schedule explains the symbols used to describe coin designs in Part 1 (for example S1 = circular, E1 = continuously milled edge, O1 = a particular obverse (heads) design, R1 = a particular reverse (tails) design).
The Schedule (Part 1) is a large table of individual coin entries (denomination, standard composition, weight ± tolerance, dimensions, a short symbol for shape/edge/obverse/reverse). Part 2 decodes those symbols and sets out the full textual description of the obverse/reverse/edge/shape features (including wordings to appear on the coin, effigy type, years, hallmark letters, and special features such as transparent capsules, colour finishes or gemstones).

In this Determination:

4 Specification of standard weight, variation, design and dimension

(1) For subsection 13A(1) of the Act, on and after the day on which this Determination commences, each item in Part 1 of Schedule 1 specifies, for a coin having the denomination and standard composition mentioned in the item (being a coin whose denomination is specified, or taken to be specified, in the Schedule to the Act): (a) the coin’s standard weight; and (b) the allowable variation from that standard weight; and (c) the coin’s dimensions; and (d) the coin’s design. (2) Subsection (1) does not affect any other determination of the standard weight and allowable variation, dimensions or design of a coin made under subsection 13A(1) of the Act.
