What it does
This Determination, titled Currency (Perth Mint) Determination 2000 (No. 1), sets legally prescribed physical and visual specifications for a defined set of Australian coins produced under the Currency Act 1965. It is made by the Minister for Financial Services and Regulation (named in the instrument as Joe Hockey) under subsection 13A(1) of the Currency Act 1965, and is dated 8 February 2000 (preamble). The Determination begins on gazettal (cl 2) and, by operation of clause 3, converts the tabular entries in Schedule 1 into mandatory specifications: for any coin matching the denomination and standard composition in columns 2 and 3 of Part 1 of Schedule 1, the Determination prescribes the standard weight and allowable variation, diameter, thickness, shape, edge, and the obverse and reverse designs set out in columns 4-6.
Schedule 1 (s 3) contains two parts. Part 1 lists six items (101-106) with explicit numerical specifications: three 1 oz coins (items 101-104) bearing denomination $1, one 2 oz coin ($2, item 105) and one 1 kilogram coin ($30, item 106). Each item records standard composition (not less than 99.9% silver), standard weight and allowable variation in grams, diameter in millimetres, thickness in millimetres, a shape code (S1), an edge code (E1 or E2), and obverse and reverse design codes (O1 and R227-R232). Part 2 decodes the symbolic codes used in Part 1: S1 = circular (item 201); E1 = continuously milled edge (item 202); E2 = 8 segments, of which 4 are milled and 4 are plain (item 203); O1 sets out an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II with surrounding inscriptions (item 204); and R227-R232 describe the reverse inscriptions, representations of two kookaburras, the inscription ‘P100’, year ‘1999’, and various circular privy marks (items 205-210). Clause 4 clarifies that the specifications in this Determination do not affect any other Determination of coin specifications.
