Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

These regulations declare a specific military group to be a terrorist organisation under Australian federal law.

What is being listed? The regulation names the armed wing of Hamas called the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades (also accepting the spellings Ezzedeen Al-Qassam Brigades or Izz al-Din Al-Qassem Brigades).

What does this mean practically? Once an organisation is specified (formally named) this way, the Criminal Code makes it a serious offence to:

Be a member of the group;
Directly or indirectly provide money, weapons, or other support;
Receive training from them; or
Associate with them for planning or carrying out terrorist acts.

Important distinction This listing applies only to the military brigades named, not automatically to other parts of Hamas or separate political entities, unless those are also specified in separate regulations.
