4 The management of imprisoned offenders, and people remanded or
otherwise detained in lawful custody, should contribute to the
maintenance of a safe, just and democratic society, particularly as
follows:
(a) by ensuring justice, security and good order at correctional
centres;
(b) by ensuring that harm suffered by victims of offenders, and their
need for protection, are considered appropriately in making
decisions about the management of offenders;
(c) by promoting the rehabilitation of imprisoned offenders and
their reintegration into society;
(d) by ensuring that imprisoned offenders and people remanded or
otherwise detained in lawful custody are treated in a decent,
humane and just way.
The Legislative Assembly for the Australian Capital Territory therefore enacts as
follows:
Preliminary Chapter 1
1 Name of Act
This Act is the Corrections Management Act 2007.
3 Dictionary
The dictionary at the end of this Act is part of this Act.
Note 1 The dictionary at the end of this Act defines certain terms used in this
Act, and includes references (signpost definitions) to other terms defined
elsewhere.
For example, the signpost definition ‘detainee—see section 6.’ means
that the term ‘detainee’ is defined in that section.
Note 2 A definition in the dictionary (including a signpost definition) applies to
the entire Act unless the definition, or another provision of the Act,
provides otherwise or the contrary intention otherwise appears (see
Legislation Act, s 155 and s 156 (1)).
4 Notes
A note included in this Act is explanatory and is not part of this Act.
Note See the Legislation Act, s 127 (1), (4) and (5) for the legal status of notes.
