What it does
The Correctional Services Act 1982 (SA) establishes and regulates South Australia's correctional system. According to section 3, its primary object is the promotion of community safety. Its other objects are to provide mechanisms for the establishment and proper administration of correctional institutions, probation and parole hostels and other related facilities; to provide for the safe and secure management of prisoners; and to facilitate prisoners' rehabilitation, reintegration and participation in community activities.
The Act covers the full correctional cycle: proclamation of prisons, admission and management of prisoners, prisoner discipline, parole, drug and alcohol testing of correctional staff, and miscellaneous enforcement powers. It creates the statutory basis for the Parole Board, the Visiting Tribunals, official visitors, and the Parole Administrative Review Commissioner.
