Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This instrument simply sets 1 January 2012 as the start date for new rules affecting social security payments between Australia and Austria.

What it does:

Activates (commences) Schedule 1 of the Social Security (International Agreements) Act 1999 Amendment Regulations 2011 (No. 1) on 1 January 2012.
This implements the Second Protocol to the social security agreement between Australia and Austria.

Who it affects:

People who have lived or worked in both Australia and Austria and need to claim pensions or benefits.
The underlying agreement helps coordinate pension entitlements so people don't lose benefits when moving between the two countries.

Why it matters: Without this document, the updated agreement would have no legal start date. This ensures the new rules protecting pension rights for people moving between Australia and Austria begin on 1 January 2012.
