Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This is a formal notice that activates the social security agreement between Australia and Latvia.

What it does:

Sets 1 January 2013 as the date when Schedule 1 of the Social Security (International Agreements) Amendment Regulation 2012 (No. 1) begins.
This triggers the Australia-Latvia Social Security Agreement, making it legally active in Australia.

Who it affects:

People who move between Australia and Latvia (e.g., workers, pensioners), as it coordinates social security benefits between the two countries—meaning time spent in one country can count towards benefits in the other.

Why it matters:

Without this instrument, the agreement would sit unused. This 'commencement' is the legal switch that turns the agreement on, allowing cross-border recognition of pension contributions and residency periods.
