Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This short instrument simply sets 1 October 2009 as the date when Schedule 1 of the Social Security (International Agreements) Act 1999 Amendment Regulations 2009 (No. 1) comes into force.

What this means:

Schedule 1 contains the actual legal rules that implement the social security agreement between Australia and Chile into Australian law.
From 1 October 2009 onwards, people who have lived or worked in both countries (such as retirees, people with disabilities, or surviving partners) could claim benefits under coordinated rules that prevent double taxation and help them qualify for pensions based on combined contribution periods in both nations.
This document itself does not create any new rights or benefits—it is purely procedural, acting as the 'on switch' for the substantive rules contained in the Schedule.
