Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This order sets the rules for flight engineers (specialist crew who monitor aircraft systems) on Australian aircraft.

When must a flight engineer be carried? An aircraft must have a flight engineer on board if:

The aircraft's flight manual lists a flight engineer as required minimum crew; or
The aircraft has a flight engineer's panel and CASA (the aviation safety regulator) has mandated one be carried; or
CASA directs that one be carried for safety or operational regularity.

Training obligations Airlines must maintain a training and checking organisation to ensure every flight engineer is properly trained for their assigned duties. This obligation cannot be avoided or delegated away.

Keeping records Flight engineers must log:

All time spent operating as a flight engineer in actual flight; and
All time spent operating as a flight engineer in an approved flight simulator.
