Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This instrument designates Karratha Airport in Western Australia as a controlled aerodrome.

What this means: A "controlled aerodrome" is an airport where air traffic control (ATC) services are active. Pilots must obtain permission (clearance) from ATC before taking off, landing, or moving on the ground, and must maintain radio contact while operating there.

Who it affects:

Pilots and airlines flying to or from Karratha (airport code: YPKA)
Air traffic controllers managing the airspace
Aviation operators using the airport

Why it matters: This formal classification means aircraft movements at Karratha are actively monitored and coordinated by air traffic controllers rather than pilots operating independently. This improves safety by preventing conflicting aircraft movements, particularly important given the industrial activity (mining, resources) in the Karratha region.

The instrument specifies the airport's exact geographic coordinates (20°42'44"S, 116°46'24"E) and commenced operation on 18 November 2010.
