Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This document gives certain pilots a temporary exemption from needing formal approval to use overseas flight simulators.

What it does Normally, pilots must get CASA (the aviation safety regulator) approval before using a flight simulator for training or checks. This exemption removes that approval requirement for pilots who:

Are renewing their instrument rating (a qualification that lets pilots fly in clouds and low visibility)
Use an overseas flight simulator provider for their proficiency check
Tell CASA at least 10 working days before doing the check

Who it affects Pilots holding an instrument rating who choose to renew it using an overseas flight simulator rather than an Australian one.

Time limit This exemption only lasts for 2 years (or until an earlier date if the related rule change is revoked). It was designed as a temporary measure while new rules bedded in.
