Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

What this does: This instrument grants Virgin Blue Airlines a temporary exemption from standard aviation safety rules that normally require aircraft to carry life rafts.

Who it affects: Specifically applies to Virgin Blue Airlines operating Boeing 737 aircraft on routes between Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Perth.

The exemption: Normally, Civil Aviation Order 20.11 requires aircraft to carry life rafts. This exemption allows Virgin Blue to operate without them on these specific domestic routes, provided they stick to a strict safety limit.

The condition: The aircraft must always remain within the lesser of:

120 minutes flying time at normal cruising speed, or
400 nautical miles

from an "adequate aerodrome" (meaning a suitable airport). This ensures the plane is never too far from a landing site in an emergency.

Duration: The exemption applied from August 2005 until the end of August 2007.
