Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This instrument gives Australian pilots a temporary exemption (from November 2012 to October 2015) that lets them use overseas flight simulators for instrument rating checks without needing specific approval from CASA.

Who it affects:

Pilots renewing their instrument rating
Those using overseas flight simulator training providers (rather than Australian ones)

What it does: Normally, under regulation 60.055, pilots must get CASA approval to use a flight simulator for training or testing. This exemption removes that requirement if the pilot:

Uses the simulator for an instrument proficiency check (to renew their instrument rating)
Gives CASA details of the proposed check at least 10 working days beforehand (as required by Civil Aviation Order 40.2.1)

Why it matters: It makes it easier and faster for pilots to maintain their qualifications using international training facilities without getting bogged down in extra paperwork for each simulator session.
