Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

What this does: This instrument temporarily exempts certain aircraft from having modern Mode S transponder equipment (a radio device that identifies aircraft to air traffic control) when flying at Brisbane Airport during a specific careers expo in August 2017.

Who it affects: Pilots and aircraft operators invited to the Aviation Careers Expo at Brisbane aerodrome (YBBN) on 19–20 August 2017, whose aircraft lack Mode S transponders.

The exemption: Normally, aircraft at major airports must carry Mode S transponders. This allows eligible aircraft to use older Mode A/C transponders (a basic identification system) instead, but only for this specific event.

Key conditions:

The aircraft must still have a working Mode A/C transponder suitable for Brisbane airspace
The flight plan must include the exact text: "RMK/CASA MODE S EXEMPT"

When it applies: Only from 18–21 August 2017 (covering setup and event days). After 21 August, the exemption automatically expires.
