Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

What this does This instrument required pilots at six specific busy general aviation airports to obtain explicit permission from Air Traffic Control (ATC) before entering, crossing, or moving along any runway when the control tower was operating.

Who it affects Pilots operating at Archerfield, Bankstown, Camden, Jandakot, Moorabbin, or Parafield aerodromes.

Why it matters It was a temporary safety measure (lasting one year) designed to prevent runway incursions—situations where aircraft enter active runways without permission, risking collisions. Previously, pilots at these "GAAP" (General Aviation Aerodrome Procedures) airports could use runways without explicit clearance in certain circumstances. This direction closed that gap by mandating radio contact and approval.

Key detail The rule only applied when ATC services were actually operating at the aerodrome.
