Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This instrument gives Airnorth (Capiteq Pty Limited) special permission to operate with fewer cabin crew than normally required on specific Embraer 170 aircraft.

What changes: Normally, airlines must follow strict cabin crew ratios under Civil Aviation Order 20.16.3. This direction suspends those usual rules for Airnorth when operating Embraer 170-100 series planes configured for up to 78 passengers.

The new rule: Airnorth must carry at least one cabin attendant for every 50 passenger seats (or part of that number). For example, a 78-seat aircraft would need at least 2 cabin attendants.

Condition: Before changing any emergency procedures in its operations manual—including exit procedures or requirements for able-bodied passengers to help during emergencies—Airnorth must give CASA 14 days' written notice.

Duration: This direction applied from 1 June 2019 to 31 May 2021.
