Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

What this does: This is a flight safety direction that bans parachute jumps within 4.8 kilometres of Barwon Heads aerodrome in Victoria (near Ocean Grove).

Who it affects: Pilots in command of aircraft carrying parachutists.

The rule: Pilots cannot allow anyone to exit the aircraft for a parachute descent if they are within 4.8 km of Barwon Heads airport (location code YBRS, coordinates 38°15.5'S 144°26.0'E).

Why it exists: This replaces an earlier safety direction that was briefly superseded by another instrument. That replacement was struck down by the Federal Court in December 2004 as invalid, so this instrument reinstates the original airspace protection.
