Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This instrument gives a specific exemption (special permission) for one particular aeroplane—a Cessna C550 with registration VH‑CCJ—to operate without a digital flight data recorder (the "black box" device that normally records technical flight data like speed and altitude).

Normally, aircraft must carry this recording equipment, but this approval allows that specific plane to skip that requirement under strict conditions:

Private use only—the aircraft cannot be used for commercial flights or charter operations
No flight training—it cannot be used to teach people to fly
Voice recorder required—it must still carry a working cockpit voice recorder (which records audio and conversations in the cockpit)
Other safety rules still apply—the aircraft must still follow all other requirements in Civil Aviation Order 20.18

The approval only operates for a limited period (from 1 April 2010 until 31 March 2012).
