Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

What this does: This instrument temporarily allows small cargo planes to operate without autopilots.

Who it affects: Operators of Australian charter aircraft used only for freight (not passengers) with a maximum take-off weight under 5,700 kg (about 5.7 tonnes).

The details: Normally, Civil Aviation Order 20.18 requires charter aircraft to have functioning autopilots. This approval creates a 3-month exemption (from 1 April to 30 June 2006) letting eligible cargo aircraft fly without meeting that specific requirement. Important: The aircraft must still comply with every other safety rule in Civil Aviation Order 20.18—this only waives the autopilot requirement.
