Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

What it does

These regulations set a $6,000 levy (fee) that commercial fishers must pay when they are allocated fishing rights, or when they renew those rights, in the Great Australian Bight Trawl Fishery.

Who it affects

Commercial fishers who hold "units of fishing capacity" (a form of tradable fishing quota) under Plan of Management No. GAB 1. This only applies to operators using trawl gear in the Great Australian Bight; recreational fishers and other fisheries are not affected.

Why it matters

This fee helps fund the administration and management of the fishery. The regulations replace the previous 1987 fee structure, updating the cost of accessing this specific Commonwealth fishery.

In simple terms: If you want to run a commercial trawler in the Great Australian Bight, you need to pay $6,000 per fishing unit to the government when you first get your allocation or renew it.
