Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This regulation updates the safety rules about what radio equipment certain ships must carry.

What it does:

Removes an existing rule (regulation 3) from the Navigation (Radio) Regulations entirely.
Updates the list of ships required to have radio telegraphy equipment (a traditional Morse code radio system). The old categories are replaced with two specific groups:
- Class II.(b) ships (a specific vessel classification under maritime law)
- Class III.(a) ships that are not equipped with radiotelephones

Who it affects:

Ship owners, operators, and masters of Australian vessels falling into the updated classification categories.
Maritime safety inspectors enforcing radio equipment standards.

Why it matters: This ensures shipping safety regulations keep pace with changes in how vessels are classified and clarifies exactly which ships must carry specific types of emergency communication equipment.
