Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

These regulations set the rules for when foreign military personnel (sailors and soldiers) can leave their warships or transport vessels and come ashore in Australia.

Who gives permission:

State Governors approve armed groups firing salutes (a ceremonial gunfire tribute) or unarmed shore leave for groups larger than 100 men. For this purpose, the State Governor acts as the representative of the Governor-General.
The Governor-General personally approves all other requests for landing armed parties, then notifies the relevant State Governor.

What is automatically allowed:

Foreign officers may wear their swords while on shore—a traditional military courtesy permitted without special permission.
Unarmed groups can land to help local police, but only if local civil authorities agree.

Why it exists: The regulations create a clear chain of command for managing foreign military presence on Australian soil, balancing diplomatic protocol with security by ensuring high-ranking officials control significant armed landings.
