Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

The Butter Fat Levy Act 1972 requires a compulsory charge on butter fat produced or first sold in Australia, making dairy producers liable to pay a levy at point of production or first sale. The funds were intended to support industry programs (marketing, research, price stabilisation), so the Act effectively imposed a direct cost on producers to finance collective dairy-sector measures and sat within broader primary‑industry levy arrangements of that era.
