### 54 Alteration to existing exits and paths to exits > > (1)  If proposed building work is to adversely affect any exit, or path of travel to an exit, in an existing Class 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9 building, the building must comply with Section D of Volume One of the National Construction Code or such other provision, or standards, as may be prescribed. > > > (2)  The relevant building surveyor for the building work referred to in [subsection (1)](#GS54@Gs1@EN) may consent to partial compliance with the requirements of that subsection, if the building surveyor is satisfied that the partial compliance is appropriate, after taking into account – > > > > > > (a) the structural adequacy of the building; and > > > > > > > (b) the requirements necessary to make reasonable provision for – > > > > > > > > > > (i) the amenity of the building and the safety and health of the people using, or intending to use, the building; and > > > > > > > > > > > (ii) appropriate measures to ensure that fire cannot spread to, or from, any adjoining building; and > > > > > > > (c) whether the building is a historic building.
