Plain English Summary

What it does

These regulations set the simulcast period for television broadcasters in major cities to 9 years. The simulcast period is the timeframe when TV stations must broadcast the same shows in both old analog and new digital formats simultaneously (this is called "simulcasting").

Who it affects

Commercial television broadcasters operating in metropolitan licence areas — essentially the major capital cities (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide).

Why it matters

This rule gives broadcasters nearly a decade to manage Australia's switch from analog to digital television. It means stations must maintain both analog and digital transmission systems for this period, giving viewers more time to upgrade their equipment before analog signals are switched off permanently.
