Commonwealth legislation
This Act has been repealed and is no longer in force. It is retained for historical reference.
This notice operates under the Broadcasting Services Act 1992 to ensure major sporting and cultural events remain available on free television. What it does: It declares that events listed in Schedule 1 are the kind that "should, in my opinion, be available free to the general public" — meaning pay-TV providers cannot buy exclusive rights to these events and lock them behind subscriptions (this is known as the "anti-siphoning" regime). Who it affects: Free-to-air broadcasters, subscription TV services, and sporting bodies negotiating broadcast rights. Time limit: The notice automatically self-destructs after 36 months (3 years), ensuring the list of protected events stays current.
