Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

These regulations give the Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) the legal power to broadcast television programs in multiple languages.

Before 1978, SBS was only authorised to run multilingual radio. These regulations changed the rules to let SBS launch television services for Australia's diverse migrant communities.

The regulations are extremely short—only three sections—and do just one thing: they authorise SBS to provide TV services in languages other than English under section 79d of the Broadcasting and Television Act 1942.
