Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This determination sets the total allowable catch (legal fishing limit) for scallops in the Bass Strait Central Zone to zero tonnes for the 2008 season.

What it means:

Commercial scallops (Pecten fumatus) and Doughboy scallops (Chlamys asperrimus) cannot be legally caught for commercial purposes during the specified period.
This effectively closes the fishery from 1 May 2008 to 20 December 2008.
The Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) made this rule under powers granted by the Fisheries Management Act 1991 and the Bass Strait Central Zone Scallop Fishery Management Plan 2002.

Why it matters: Setting the catch limit to zero is a conservation measure, typically used to protect declining scallop populations or allow stocks to recover before reopening the fishery.
