Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This determination sets the 2023 fishing season for commercial scallop harvesting in the Bass Strait Central Zone — the stretch of water between mainland Australia and Tasmania.

What it does It opens the fishery for exactly 8 July 2023 to 31 December 2023. Outside these dates, commercial scallop fishing in this zone is off-limits.

Who it affects

Commercial fishers holding permits for this specific fishery
Anyone tracking scallop stocks in Bass Strait

Why it matters The Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) uses this instrument to prevent overfishing by creating a strict time window for the harvest. It is a standard seasonal gate — letting boats in for the second half of the year, then shutting the gate to let scallop populations recover.
