Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This instrument sets the dates for the scallop fishing season in the Bass Strait Central Zone.

What it does:

Opens the fishery for scallop harvesting from 12 July 2021 to 31 December 2021
Makes it illegal to fish for scallops in this zone outside these dates (unless another law applies)

Who it affects:

Commercial fishers licensed to operate in the Bass Strait Central Zone Scallop Fishery
The Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA), which monitors compliance

Why it matters: Fishing seasons prevent overfishing by limiting harvesting to specific periods, allowing scallop populations to replenish and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the fishery.
