Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

What this does: This Order temporarily bans the export of live animals (mainly cattle) from Australia to Indonesia for six months.

Who it affects: Companies and individuals who hold a licence to export live-stock (cattle, sheep, and goats).

Key details:

The ban: For six months from when this Order starts, licence holders cannot send live animals to Indonesia.
The exception: The ban does not apply to "breeder live-stock" — animals being sent overseas specifically for breeding purposes, not for meat production.
Why it matters: This was enacted in response to public outcry over animal cruelty in Indonesian slaughterhouses. It halted a major agricultural trade overnight, affecting Australian farmers and Indonesian food security.

Legal basis: Made by the Secretary of the Department of Agriculture under the Australian Meat and Live-stock Industry Act 1997.
