Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This Order bans the export of live animals (livestock) from Australia to Saudi Arabia by anyone holding an export licence under the Australian Meat and Live-stock Industry Act 1997.

Key points:

Broad prohibition: Licence holders cannot export livestock to Saudi Arabia. This includes not just direct shipping, but also "causing" exports, assisting others, or being knowingly involved in importing Australian animals into Saudi Arabia.
Expanded coverage: This replaces a 2002 Order that only covered sheep and goats, extending the ban to all types of livestock (such as cattle, camels, and other animals).
Absolute ban: The prohibition applies to all licence holders without exemptions or permits provided for in this Order.

This was made in October 2003 by the Department of Agriculture to regulate Australia's live animal trade with Saudi Arabia.
