(d) a magistrate.1
law enforcement agency means:2
(a) the Australian Federal Police; or3
(b) a police force of a State or Territory; or4
(c) a Commonwealth body, or an authority of a State or a5
Territory, that has functions relating to law enforcement.6
law enforcement or intelligence interests means interests in one or7
more of the following:8
(a) avoiding prejudice or disruption to national and international9
efforts relating to law enforcement, criminal intelligence,10
criminal investigation, foreign intelligence and security11
intelligence;12
(b) protecting the technologies and methods used to collect,13
analyse, secure or otherwise deal with, criminal intelligence,14
foreign intelligence or security intelligence;15
(c) the protection and safety of informants and of persons16
associated with informants;17
(d) ensuring that any of the following are not discouraged from18
giving information to a nation’s government and government19
agencies:20
(i) intelligence or security agencies;21
(ii) law enforcement agencies;22
(iii) foreign agencies responsible for intelligence, security or23
law enforcement;24
(e) avoiding disclosure of lawful methods or procedures for25
preventing, detecting, investigating, or dealing with matters26
arising out of, breaches or evasions of the law the disclosure27
of which would, or would be reasonably likely to, prejudice28
the effectiveness of those methods or procedures.29
law of the Commonwealth includes a law in force in an external30
Territory or the Jervis Bay Territory, so far as the law is so in force31
because of an Act providing for the acceptance, administration or32
government of that Territory.33
legal aid officer means:34

(a) a member or member of staff of an authority established by1
or under a law of a State or Territory for purposes that2
include providing legal assistance; or3
(b) a person to whom the Attorney-General has delegated the4
Attorney-General’s powers and functions under section 269.5
legal practitioner means a barrister, a solicitor, a barrister and6
solicitor, or a legal practitioner, of the High Court or of the7
Supreme Court of a State or Territory.8
national policing information: see subsection 181(3).9
National Policing Information Committee: see Committee.10
national policing information function means any of the functions11
set out in the following:12
(a) paragraph 24(d);13
(b) paragraph 24(e);14
(c) paragraph 24(i), insofar as the doing of a thing is incidental15
or conducive to the performance of a function mentioned in16
paragraph (a) or (b) of this definition.17
national policing information system: see subsection 181(1).18
National Policing Information Systems and Services Special19
Account (or Account) means the special account continued in20
existence by section 204.21
non-disclosure notation: see subsection 101(1).22
notice to produce: see section 50.23
officer of Customs has the meaning given by subsection 4(1) of the24
Customs Act 1901.25
official matter: see subsection 101(3).26
ONI means the Office of National Intelligence.27
ordinary search means a search of a person or of articles in the28
possession of a person that may include:29
