127 Protection of witnesses etc.5
(1) Subject to this Act, a person summoned to attend or appear before6
an examiner as a witness has the same protection as a witness in7
proceedings in the High Court.8
(2) The Director-General may make such arrangements as are9
necessary to do the following:10
(a) prevent prejudice to the safety of a person because the person11
or another person:12
(i) has responded, is responding, or is to respond, to a13
notice to produce; or14
(ii) has been, is, or is to be, a witness at an examination;15
(b) protect a person from intimidation or harassment because the16
person or another person:17
(i) has responded, is responding, or is to respond, to a18
notice to produce; or19
(ii) has been, is, or is to be, a witness at an examination.20
(3) The arrangements may include arrangements with:21
(a) the Minister; or22
(b) the AFP Commissioner or a member or special member of23
the Australian Federal Police; or24
(c) the head (however described) or a member of the police force25
of a State or Territory.26
(4) This section does not limit the Witness Protection Act 1994.27

A controlled intelligence operation is an operation that is carried4
out for purposes relating to obtaining intelligence relevant to5
serious and organised crime.6
A participant in a controlled intelligence operation is authorised to7
engage in certain kinds of unlawful conduct and is not subject to8
criminal or civil liability for this conduct.9
The Attorney-General may grant an authority to conduct a10
controlled intelligence operation. The Director-General may grant11
an authority in urgent circumstances.12
The unauthorised communication of information relating to a13
controlled intelligence operation is an offence.14
