Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This is a formal commencement proclamation — a legal notice that activates part of the Australian Citizenship Amendment (Defence Families) Act 2012.

What it does:

Sets 1 January 2013 as the date when Schedule 1 of the Act comes into force (legally 'switches on')
This started the new citizenship rules affecting defence force members and their families

Who it affects:

People covered by the Defence Families citizenship changes (military personnel and their families seeking Australian citizenship)

Why it matters: Without this document, the law would remain dormant. This is the legal trigger that made the policy real from 1 January 2013 onwards.
