Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

What this is: This is the formal legal document where the federal Environment Minister approved the management plan for the Coral Sea Commonwealth Marine Reserve.

What it does: Under Australia's national environmental law (the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999), this instrument gives legal force to the "Coral Sea Commonwealth Marine Reserve Management Plan 2014-2024." Think of it as the official signature on the rulebook that governs what activities are allowed in this massive ocean protected area.

Why it matters: The Coral Sea Marine Reserve covers nearly one million square kilometres of ocean east of Queensland. This approval was the final step needed to put conservation rules in place for a decade, protecting coral reefs, fish, and marine life while managing activities like fishing and tourism.
