Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

The Minister formally declares Ommatophoca rossii (Ross Seal) a "specially protected species" under the Antarctic Treaty (Environment Protection) Act 1980, with the declaration taking effect the day after registration on the Federal Register of Legislative Instruments. This changes the species’ legal status so the protections, permissions and compliance obligations in the primary Act apply, though the instrument itself does not set out those specific measures.
