Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

What this does: This removes a special export exemption for the Macquarie Island Toothfish Fishery.

The practical effect: Previously, fish and sea creatures (like toothfish) caught in this Southern Ocean fishery could be exported from Australia without wildlife trade permits, provided they weren't endangered species. This instrument deletes that exemption from the List of Exempt Native Specimens.

Who it affects: Commercial fishers and exporters operating in the Macquarie Island Toothfish Fishery. They will now need to apply for individual export permits under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) to export these specimens, just like exporters of most other native Australian wildlife.

Why it matters: The change brings this fishery back under standard wildlife export controls, ensuring tighter oversight of trade in native marine species from this sub-Antarctic Australian territory.
