Plain English Summary

3/10 complexity

What this does: This rule requires owners of specific Piper/Ted Smith Aerostar aircraft to modify the alternator field circuit protection — a safety system that prevents the aircraft's electrical generator (alternator) from overloading or failing.

Who it affects: Owners of Aerostar 600, 601, and 601P model aircraft with specific serial numbers listed in two groups (earlier and later production runs). If your plane's serial number starts with 60-, 61-, or 61P- and falls within the listed ranges, this applies to you.

What you must do: Have a mechanic install the modification described in Ted Smith Service Bulletin SB600-54 within 200 hours of flight time after July 31, 1977.

Why it matters: Faulty alternator protection can cause sudden electrical failure in flight, potentially blacking out navigation instruments, radios, and lighting — a serious safety risk for twin-engine aircraft.
