What it does
This airworthiness directive (AD), styled AD/THIELERT/9 Amdt 1 and effective 16 June 2008, mandates removal and replacement of a specific clutch assembly fitted to Thielert Aircraft Engines GmbH TAE125-02-99 engines (commercial designation Centurion 2.0). The operative instruction is "Replace the clutch in accordance with Thielert Aircraft Engines Service Bulletin TM TAE 125-1006 P1, Revision 1 or later NAA approved revision" (Requirement). The AD identifies the affected part as clutch assembly P/N 05-7211-K000304 and requires replacement by the improved-design clutch P/N 05-7211-K006001 (Background).
Mechanically, the AD changes the state of play from repetitive inspection to mandatory removal and replacement. The earlier, original AD had mandated repetitive inspections pending installation of the new clutch; the amendment removes the inspection regime and requires installation of the new part number (Background: "the original issue of this AD was published to mandate repetitive inspections until a new clutch P/N 05-7211-K006001 is installed... this amendment supersedes the previous requirements and requires the removal of the affected clutch assemblies P/N 05-7211-K000304..."). The AD applies to "All Thielert Aircraft Engines GmbH TAE125-02-99 (commercial designation Centurion 2.0) engines having clutch assembly P/N 05-7211-K000304 installed" (Applicability).
The directive sets specific compliance timing tied to the flight hours (FH) since the last clutch inspection: engines with less than 50 FH since last inspection must be brought to the 50 FH limit before accumulating more FH; engines with between 50 FH and 300 FH since last inspection must be rectified "Before further flight" (Compliance). The AD also permits a limited operational exception: "one Ferry Flight with pilot only to a Maintenance Station is allowed, for engines that have accumulated more than 50 FH, to accomplish the engine clutch replacement required by this AD. The flight shall be limited to VFR conditions" (Compliance). The AD was issued by a CASA delegate, James Coyne, dated 11 June 2008 (signature block).
