What it does
This instrument is an Australian Airworthiness Directive (AD) identified as AD/THIELERT/6, dated 11/2007 and made effective 25 October 2007. The directive requires modification of the engine oil system on a defined population of Thielert Aircraft Engines TAE125-01 engines, by fitting a catchtank (sump) filter adaptor in accordance with Thielert Aircraft Engines technical material identified as TM/SB TAE 125-0016. The AD expressly accepts either the initial issue of the SB dated 19 September 2006 or Revision 1 dated 15 June 2007 as the approved method of compliance. The AD sets a short compliance window, mandating the modification be completed within the next 50 flight hours after the AD becomes effective, but not later than 30 November 2007, whichever occurs first after the effective date. The AD is signed by Charles Lenarcic, Delegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA), with the AD document recording a background safety incident that prompted the requirement.
Mechanically, the change required is a retrofit to the engine oil system: installation of a filter adaptor on the oil catchtank (sump), using the detailed procedure and parts set out in Thielert TM/SB TAE 125-0016 (initial issue or Rev 1). The AD identifies the safety rationale and the causal chain from the reported in-flight engine shutdown that the modification is intended to address, and it also references a corresponding EASA AD (EASA AD 2007-0232 dated 23 August 2007). The AD specifies applicability by engine serial number range, limits the affected engines to TAE125-01 units up to and including serial number 02-01-1018, and lists aircraft types on which these engines are known to be installed. The text of the AD does not include penalty or enforcement provisions within the instrument itself.
