What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD), AD/THIELERT/12 Rail Pressure Control Valve (2/2009), mandates a mechanical and procedural change to Thielert Aircraft Engines GmbH TAE 125-02-99 (commercial designation Centurion 2.0) engines. Mechanically, it requires replacement of a specific rail pressure control valve and a modification to the VRail Plug. Procedurally, it requires amendment of the approved engine maintenance schedule to incorporate the airworthiness limitations and the continuing tasks set out in Chapter 5 "Airworthiness Limitations" of the engine Operation & Maintenance Manual OM-02-02. The AD identifies the parts and documents by part number and service bulletin reference: the valve to be replaced is the rail pressure control valve P/N 05-3940-K001501, to be superseded by the revised valve identified in the Background as P/N 05-7320-E000702 via the Thielert service bulletin TAE SB TM 125-1008 P1 R1.2, and the VRail Plug must be modified in accordance with that same service bulletin (Requirement 1).
The compliance timetable is stated in the AD. Requirement 1 (replacement and VRail Plug modification) must be done within the next 110 flight hours after the AD’s effective date, unless previously accomplished. Requirement 2 (amendment of the approved engine maintenance schedule to include Chapter 5 “Airworthiness Limitations” of OM-02-02 Issue 1 Revision 2.3) must be done within three months after the effective date. Requirement 3 (the ongoing tasks and thresholds thereafter) takes effect after completion of Requirements 1 and 2. The AD became effective on 12 February 2009 and was issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) delegate, James Coyne, on 22 December 2008.
The AD includes a serial-number carve‑out: engines with serial numbers identified in TAE SB TM 125-1008 P1 R1 have already incorporated the modification and therefore do not need to comply with Requirement 1. It also states that the use of later approved revisions of the referenced documents is acceptable for compliance. The AD cross-references EASA AD 2008-0215 dated 5 December 2008 (Note 2) as related material. The Background section explicitly links the AD to occurrences and service experience indicating that failure of the original valve could result in in‑flight engine shutdown(s), and that the manufacturer introduced a new valve and amended the Airworthiness Limitation Section to include scheduled replacement of the valve.
