What it does
This instrument is an Airworthiness Directive (AD/TFE 731/35, dated 5/2008) issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (delegate David Punshon, signature dated 6 March 2008) that mandates removal and inspection of specified High Pressure (HP) turbine rotor discs fitted to Honeywell (AlliedSignal/Garrett/AiResearch) TFE731 series turbofan engines. The AD identifies two groups of affected parts by part number and by serial numbers listed in Honeywell service documents, prescribes a drawdown schedule tied to cycles‑since‑new (CSN), and requires a curvic root radius inspection performed by a specific Honeywell Certificate Repair Station in Phoenix, Arizona (No. ZN3R030M), before any removed disc is eligible for reinstallation.
Mechanically, the AD does three things (set out in the source under "Requirement"):
- For certain engine variants (TFE731-2C, -3B/BR/C/CR/D/DR, -4R, -5AR/BR/R), it requires removal from service of HP turbine rotor assemblies that contain HP turbine rotor discs P/N 3075772-1 when the disc serial number appears in Table 1 of Honeywell Service Bulletin No. TFE731-72-3720, dated 5 July 2006.
- For other engine variants (TFE731-20R/20AR/20BR, -40/-40AR/-40R, -60), it requires removal from service of HP turbine rotor assemblies that contain HP turbine rotor discs P/N 3060841-1 when the disc serial number appears in Table 1 of Honeywell Alert Service Bulletin TFE731-A72-5185, dated 5 July 2006.
- It then requires that any HP turbine rotor disc removed under those requirements must pass a curvic root radius inspection performed by Honeywell Engines, Systems and Services, Phoenix, Arizona, Certificate Repair Station No. ZN3R030M before the disc can be reinstalled.
The AD defines "access to the HP turbine rotor discs" for the purpose of the compliance schedule as "the removal of the HP turbine rotor assembly from the engine." The AD became effective on 8 May 2008 and explicitly cites FAA AD 2008-02-19 Amdt 15349 dated 16 January 2008 as a related reference.
