What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD) AD/TAY/18, issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) on 23 November 2006 and effective 18 January 2007, mandates a revised high pressure (HP) compressor stator vane setting procedure for certain Rolls-Royce Tay series engines. It requires operators to incorporate the revised vane setting procedure detailed in Rolls-Royce Deutschland alert service bulletin (ASB) TAY-72-A1653 Revision 1 dated 5 October 2006, or any later revision approved by a National Airworthiness Authority (NAA). The AD mechanically changes how HP compressor stator vanes are set during engine maintenance, specifically targeting the clearance between the stator vane tips and the HP compressor rotor spacers.
The AD supersedes and cancels CASA AD/F100/75 Amendment 1 dated June 2006. That earlier directive applied only to Tay engines installed on Fokker model F100 aircraft. The new AD expands the applicability: it covers Tay 611-8, 611-8C, 620-15, 650-15, 651-54 engine models irrespective of the aircraft type on which they are installed. The AD notes that these engines are commonly installed on Boeing 727, Fokker F28 Mark 0070 and Mark 0100, and Gulfstream G-IV and GIV-X series aircraft, but the applicability is not limited to those types.
The compliance schedule varies by engine model. For Tay 611-8 engines, the procedure must be done on all engines at the next engine shop visit after the effective date when the module is disassembled for refurbishment or overhaul; additionally, if both engines on an aircraft are affected, at least one engine must be done no later than 5,450 flight hours after the effective date. For Tay 611-8C engines, the corresponding limit is 6,800 flight hours since new. For Tay 620-15, 650-15 and related variants, the procedure must be done at the next such shop visit but not later than 1 January 2015; if both engines on the same aircraft are affected, at least one engine must be done before 1 January 2011. For Tay 651-54 engines, the procedure must be done at the next shop visit but no later than 8,200 flight hours after the effective date.
