What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD/T53/23, effective 24 September 2009) imposes mandatory inspection and replacement requirements on a defined set of AlliedSignal (Lycoming) T53-series turboshaft engines equipped with specified combustion chamber housings (CCH). Mechanically, the AD does the following (see Applicability and Requirement paragraphs):
- Identifies covered engines and CCH part numbers: Honeywell T5313B, T5317A, T5317A-1, T5317B and T5317BCV engines with CCH P/Ns 1-130-610-05, 1-130-610-12 and 1-130-610-17 (Applicability; Note 1).
- Requires an initial visual inspection of the area between points A and B around the entire housing circumference for weld repairs and cracks (Requirement 1), to be done within 50 hours time-in-service (TIS) after the AD’s effective date (Compliance for Requirement 1).
- Mandates immediate actions if defects are found: replace the CCH before further flight for any crack found (Requirement 2.a and Compliance) and replace the CCH within 100 hours TIS if any weld repairs are found (Requirement 2.b and Compliance).
- Requires recurrent visual inspections for cracks at 50-hour intervals (Requirement 3 and its Compliance).
- Requires ultrasonic inspection per Honeywell SB No. T53-0144 Rev 4 within specified intervals that differ by part number: for P/Ns 1-130-610-05 and 1-130-610-12 within 500 hours TIS or at next hot section inspection (but not exceeding six months), for P/N 1-130-610-17 at first overhaul but not exceeding 5,000 hours or 11,000 cycles (Requirement 5 and Compliance).
- Prescribes repeat ultrasonic inspections at either every 1,200 flights (landings) since last inspection, or every 200 flights if the prior ultrasonic inspection had certain findings (Requirement 6 and Compliance).
