Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This AD required operators of Swearingen SA‑226 aircraft with Garrett TPE‑331 engines and four‑bladed Hartzell HC‑B4 propellers to install a cockpit placard by 30 Oct 1987 warning pilots to avoid use of full reverse pitch until the propellers were modified per Hartzell Service Bulletin 153. It was issued because pitch‑change rod B‑3018S‑2 could fail in full reverse, causing asymmetric thrust or engine overheating; the placard was a temporary safety measure pending the permanent fix.

AD/SWSA226/54 Placard - Use of Reverse Thrust 10/87 DM

Applicability: All model Swearingen SA-226 fitted with Garrett TPE-331 turboprop engines to which Hartzell model HC-B4(T,M)N-5( ) propellers are fitted.

Requirement: Install a temporary placard in a suitable position in the cockpit worded as follows: “Until propellers are modified to Hartzell S.B. 153, avoid use of full reverse pitch.”

Compliance: By 30 October 1987.

Background: During the past several months the four bladed steel hub propeller fitted to Swearingen SA-226 series aircraft has experienced failure of the pitch change rod P/N B-3018S-2. Failure has occured during ground operation with application of full reverse pitch. Rod failure in this position will cause the propeller to travel deeper into reverse which could cause severe asymmetric thrust conditions or unacceptable engine overtemperature conditions.
