What it does
This airworthiness directive (AD), styled AD/SWSA226/43 Amendment 7, imposes an immediate maintenance obligation on operators and maintainers of Fairchild (Swearingen) SA226 and SA227 series aeroplanes. The directive’s core command is in the Requirement paragraph: “The approved system of maintenance of all SA 226 and SA 227 series aeroplanes shall include all relevant inspections and life limitations specified in the applicable issue of Fairchild Swearingen Corporation Manuals ‘Inspection Schedule and Retirement Lives for Life Limited Components’,” with model-specific manual references for SA227 and SA226 models. The AD requires operators to adopt the latest FAA approved amendment of the referenced manuals: for SA227 series, Airworthiness Limitations Manual ST-UN-M001 or ST-UN-M003; for SA226 series, Inspection Manual ST-UN-M002. The AD also contains a specific note on retirement of two part numbers for cargo and crew door lower latch assemblies, P/N 27-24135 and 27-24151, directing retirement in accordance with the Airworthiness Limitations Section of the maintenance manual for the particular aircraft type and model.
The AD sets the compliance timing as “Forthwith,” and Amendment 7 became effective on 27 January 2012 (the delegate signed the instrument on 16 January 2012). The Background paragraph summarises prior amendments and explains that Amendment 7 updates compliance to the latest version of the requirements document without changing the compliance time. Earlier amendments updated referenced manuals, removed a previous aircraft-structure retirement-life note, and added manual ST-UN-M003 for SA227-CC and DC aircraft. The AD applies expressly to “All model SA 226 and SA 227 aircraft.”
Mechanically, the AD changes what an operator’s approved system of maintenance must include, tying that obligation to specific manuals and to the condition that the manuals be at the latest FAA approved amendment. The AD therefore replaces or overlays any prior maintenance documentation or practices for these airframes to the extent those practices do not already include the inspections and life limits specified in the named manuals at the specified amendment status. It is an immediate regulatory instruction to incorporate the named Airworthiness Limitations and Inspection Manuals into the operator’s maintenance regime and to follow specified retirement lives and inspections therein.
