What it does
This instrument is an airworthiness directive-style supplementary requirement titled AD/SUPP/8 Amendment 1, captioned "Towing Release System" and dated 5/2016. It imposes mandatory maintenance, inspection, functional testing and overhaul requirements for towing release systems used on aircraft that fall within the coverage of Part 42 of CASR 1998, except where those systems are covered by an Approved Maintenance Program under Subpart 42.J of CASR 1998 (see "Applicability"). The instrument establishes three discrete sets of actions:
- Requirement 1: Daily inspection actions to be performed while the aircraft is engaged in towing operations, specifying physical checks of cockpit control movement, cleanliness of the release mechanism, visible damage or wear, and a functional check (see "Requirement" 1(a)-(d), and "Compliance" for frequency and recordation).
- Requirement 2: Actions to be carried out at the next Maintenance Release after specified historical dates and thereafter at each issue of a Maintenance Release. These actions focus on cleaning and lubrication, wear checks on the hook/beak and related parts, checks on operating levers, cables and pulleys, and a test of the mechanism's ability to return to a safe over‑centre position with a minimum return force threshold (see "Requirement" 2(a)-(d) and "Compliance" for timing).
- Requirement 3: Overhaul actions to be done prior to the next Maintenance Release after a specified date and repeated at intervals not exceeding 1 000 hours time in service or one year, whichever occurs first. This component mandates removal and overhaul of the release assembly in accordance with the manufacturer’s data and instructions, and sets a functional limit on pilot effort under a specified load and geometry (see "Requirement" 3(a)-(b) and "Compliance" for intervals and documentation).
